Clearing the Air

Candles, incense cone, water

As any item in one's collection, crystals need to be properly cared for. They possess, can take, and can alter another's energy; in doing so, proper cleaning is a must.

General rules for cleansing crystals are a calm atmosphere-a meditation room, for example- so the energies are still, a clear mind so the bearer's energies do not compromise the cleaning, and know which cleansing technique is appropriate for which crystal.

One technique is cool water. Water is a cleansing element, but cool water can clean energy as long as the crystal is submerged long enough. If you only have a minute or two, running cold water over the crystal will suffice. Make sure the crystal CAN be treated with water before using technique.

Another technique is incense smoke. Though incense sticks give off enough smoke to neutralize smaller tumblestones, incense cones are a better choice for larger, raw (unpolished) crystals. A feather may be used to to spread the smoke across the stone, but is not necessary.

Sage, however, is one of the most common ways to cleanse a crystal. One large leaf is more than enough (especially since it can give off an offensive odor). If you have a feather, use it to spread the smoke; if not, move the crystal back and forth through the smoke for 20-30 seconds.

Remember that peace of mind is essential to a successful crystal cleansing. Light a candle if it's soothing, play instrumental music to focus, whatever you prefer. Allow this to also balance yourself. Relax and enjoy.
