With Oscar-caliber movies like "The Birth of a Nation," "Queen of Katwe," and now "Fences," #OscarsSoWhite could be replaced by #OscarsSoBlack, and personally, I'd be fine with that.
"Fences," an award-winning play, which premiered in 1983, and was written by the late August Wilson, has been adapted into film and is directed by none other than Denzel Washington. He also reprises his role alongside Viola Davis. The two starred in its 2010 Broadway revival, for which they were awarded Tony's.
Earlier in the week, the first trailer was released, and Oscar buzz started immediately; maybe even before production started. We are talking about Denzel and Viola here.
As Dave Trumbore for Collider.com wrote in his article, the trailer shows "less an indictment of race relations in America and more a story about the deep and complicated emotional ties between family members."
Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, "Fences" focuses on a 53-year-old retired baseball player turned garbage collector (Washington) who works hard to support his wife (Davis) and son.
The film hits theaters Christmas Day. Check out the trailer below.
