Who said drugs are bad? Well who ever it was they were right. My mom has been in chemotherapy for a few months now, and everyday that I sit next to her while she is being poked with needles and clear fluids that look harmless I wander what it’s really doing to her.

Now what is Chemo? Chemo is a cancer treatment that includes a single drug or a combination of drugs. Now why would we pump drugs into people, what are the benefits to it? Well the goal of chemo is to stop or slow the growth of cancer cells, but it will also affect healthy cells.

When chemo affect the healthy cells it can lead to some major side effects. Side effects like low white blood cells that can leave the body open more serious infection. Also low red blood cells can lead to anemia, fatigue, chest pain, and much more. Platelets cell are also affected by chemo, leaving a person open to bleeding out.

When my mom was getting her chemo this past week I talked to her Nurse Kate. We talked about the procedure of how each patient gets their chemo. Each Nurse has to get gowned up to go into the room where they keep the chemo. After they take the chemo to the patient and the patient has to tell them their full name and date of birthday, and another nurse has to come and double check the label on the chemo bag and on the patient wristband. This process keeps each patient safe.
